About Udawalawe

Sri Lanka's Premier Elephant Sanctuary

Udawalawe National Park, established in 1972, spans 30,821 hectares of diverse landscapes including grasslands, forests, and wetlands. The park was created around the Udawalawe Reservoir and is renowned for its large population of Sri Lankan elephants.

Home to over 500 elephants, the park offers some of the best elephant viewing opportunities in Asia. Beyond elephants, visitors can spot water buffalo, spotted deer, sambar deer, wild boar, and over 180 bird species including the magnificent peacock and various eagles.
